Innovative partnership with UEL to recruit student nurses

The North East London Foundation Trust and the University of East London have launched an innovative partnership to help students in healthcare professions gain valuable experience in entry level NHS jobs.

The partnership offers flexible work opportunities on the NELFT Staff Bank to those studying to qualify in nursing or allied health professions, and the ability to work around their studies and gain valuable experience in a variety of clinical settings.

Dr Caroline Allum, chief medical director at NELFT, said: “I’m very pleased to welcome the first cohort of UEL students to #TeamNELFT. We’re committed to supporting those at the start of their career journey to succeed. This partnership will help ensure that we employ the best people to provide the best care for our patients.”

Matthew Almond, interim head of nursing at UEL, said: “The partnership will help accelerate careers opportunities for our students as part of the university’s careers-first mission. This is an excellent opportunity for students to gain valuable healthcare experience and earn money while they study, ensuring they will be fully workforce-ready upon graduation. The first event in November was very successful, with a number of students hired on the day. Moving forward, we will be introducing our Podiatry students to the NELFT staff bank as we expand the programme.”

The first cohort of 24 students has already been successfully recruited and onboarding is underway. 

As a member of the temporary staffing service students receive weekly pay, paid annual leave, paid mandatory training, access to the NHS Pension scheme and NHS discounts, and the opportunity to apply for permanent vacancies.
