Nursing conference celebrating best practice in patient safety

This month we were delighted to bring together almost 90 nurses from across all ten London mental health trusts for a learning event and a day of sharing best practice in patient safety. The conference, held at South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust on Friday 1 March, was a day to celebrate the best of our nursing staff and share experiences.

The theme for the event was around learning from serious incidents with a focus on observation and therapeutic engagement.

The event was opened by Amanda Pithouse, Chair of CSG’s nursing group, followed by presentations from our member trusts, where all attendees were able to note similarities and differences from ways of working in their own trusts and pick up on initiatives to implement going forward.

Amanda Pithouse said:

It was fantastic to see so many nursing colleagues meeting together. This event provided the opportunity for nurses to come together to learn, share knowledge, and inspire one another. These events provide a platform for networking, education, and growth in the nursing field. We will be planning many more events to support and develop patient safety across London in the future. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed and attended the event.

Sharon Spain, Executive Director of Nursing and Quality at South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust, said:

When it comes to patient safety, these conferences play a pivotal role. Today has given our nurses an opportunity to attend workshops and presentations specifically focused on patient safety and high quality of care. Through interactions, nurses learnt about successful safety initiatives implemented elsewhere. It also provided a great opportunity for networking and collaboration.

The conference has led to many discussions that are continuing to evolve and be worked into future plans, so that not only is patient care developed positively but also staff can see and feel the difference they make.
