Formal ministerial approval for merger by acquisition

North London NHS Foundation Trust has received formal approval from the Secretary of State for the acquisition of the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, effective 1 April 2026.

The Trust looks forward to welcoming new colleagues and working together to achieve better outcomes for their service users, students and staff.

Notes to editors:

  1. This is the formal approval by the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care of the business case for North London NHS Foundation Trust to acquire the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust.
  2. This milestone follows adoption of the full business case (FBC) by the respective boards of the two foundation trusts in January 2026, followed by approval by both sets of Trust governors.
  3. The Secretary of State approval means that the Tavistock & Portman NHS Foundation Trust will become part of the North London NHS Foundation Trust on 1 April 2026. The Tavistock brand and university services will continue.
